Antique Shakyamuni Buddha Statue Features
Traditional features of the statue include the third eye of wisdom between the brows, right turning hair coils, Ushnisha topknot and alms bowl. Additionally, he is seated in the full lotus pose on a single lotus pedestal. Shakyamuni is portraying the traditional Bhumisparsha mudra. This is a very special and significant Buddhist mudra that is attributed only to Shakyamuni.
The Bhumisparsha mudra is portrayed while sitting in full lotus with the right hand draped over the right knee. Additionally, the hand is flat and the palm is facing inwards. The index finger is seen lightly touching the ground. With this mudra Shakyamuni is calling on the earth goddess to witness his vanquishment of the demon Mara. Mara had appeared before the Buddha while he was on the verge of enlightenment. Mara had used evil inducements such as women and earthly pleasures to distract him from his goal. However, he was ultimately unsuccessful.
