This Guru Milarepa statue is depicted just as he was found practicing meditation in the Tibetan mountain caves. Additionally, he has his hand raised to his ear because he used poetry and songs for teaching tools. He also holds the traditional kapala skull cup in the palm of his left hand and he sits on a deer skin in Indian ascetic tradition.
Before he became a venerable master of the Kagyu school he was a student of the venerable master Guru Marpa. Local legend tells the story of the three towers that Milarepa had to build to gain the respect of Guru Marpa. Indeed, one of the towers he built in the 11th century still stands today. As a result of Guru Marpa’s guidance Milarepa was able to overcome his past when he used sorcery to seek revenge on his adversaries.
